The Story of LWOM

At Little World of Mine, play isn’t just something we encourage, it’s at the heart of everything we do.

I’m a parent to two young children, and a primary school teacher with over 15 years of experience in Early Years education. As an Early Years Leader, I’ve had the privilege of overseeing pre-school, nursery, and reception, and throughout my career, one thing has always remained constant: my deep belief in the power of play.

One of my favourite areas in any Early Years classroom has always been the playdough area. Why? Because children absolutely love it. But more importantly, I’ve seen first-hand how sensory play provides something truly special, a calm, creative, and pressure-free space where children can bring their ideas to life.

What makes sensory play so powerful is that it is completely open-ended. There are no expectations, no right or wrong outcomes, and no pressure to perform. For many children, especially those with limited language, limited confidence or life experiences, this kind of low-demand environment is where confidence begins to grow naturally.

Over the years, I’ve watched children thrive in these spaces. Without pressure, without constant questioning, and without being rushed, they begin to communicate in their own time and in their own way. Play becomes their voice.

However, Early Years education has changed significantly. Increasing pressure for higher academic outcomes has meant less time for child-led play. More of the day is now focused on structured teaching and scheme-based learning, often expecting all children to learn in the same way and at the same pace. It’s like trying to grow a plant without nurturing the roots first.

As a parent, I’ve been grateful to do things a little differently at home. While I absolutely support my children’s learning, I will never let it come at the expense of their play. After a full day at school, they don’t want more worksheets, and honestly, neither do I. They want to play, imagine, and explore the things that excite them.

In our home, imaginative play is everywhere. “Pretend that I…” and “Pretend that you…” are phrases I hear daily. These ‘let’s pretend’ years are so fleeting, and I am determined to protect them for as long as possible.

That passion is what led to the creation of Little World of Mine.

It began as simple, handmade kits and activities for my own children. Watching how deeply engaged they became and how long they would immerse themselves in their own little worlds, gave me the confidence to share them with others.

And that’s exactly what these kits are designed to do, create space for children to slow down, explore, imagine, and simply be children, without expected outcomes, being rushed and away from devices and screens.
